Instructor Bio

Although her students claim she “came out of the womb knitting,” Thea Gray began knitting in third grade. She has barely stopped since and has even flown 6000 miles in a weekend to polish her couture knitting techniques. Known for her considerable patience, Thea loves introducing folks to the joys of knitting.

2008 Summer Knitting Retreat


2008 Knitting Retreat at Point Reyes Hostel - $190

Curious about our upcoming knitting retreat in the coastal wilderness of Point Reyes? It will be held at the historic Point Reyes Hostel, the only lodging available in the Point Reyes National Seashore Park, which The San Francisco Chronicle calls "a warm country cabin style, in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore."

The retreat fee is $190, which includes all instruction and two nights’ stay in the Point Reyes Hostel bunkhouse, plus coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon. No meals are provided.

Friday, June 13
7:00-9:00 pm: INTRODUCING COLOR
Get comfortable with color as you learn how to do Fair Isle (stranded colorwork using two or more colors) and intarsia (blocks of color in a field, as in argyle patterns).

Saturday, June 14
9:00 am-noon: KNITTING FOR TEXTURE
Be inducted into the mysteries of making elegant lace, ropey cables, and bold entrelac designs.

Noon-1:30 pm: LUNCH BREAK
On site or in town.

2:00-4:30 pm: KNITTING MAKES THE WORLD GO ‘ROUND
Make a pulsewarmer (or two!) as you learn three ways to work in the round: on double point needles, two circular needles, and with one long circular, using the magic loop technique. If you’re feeling bold, use your new color skills!

4:30-8:00 pm: FREE TIME AND DINNER BREAK
Enjoy some bird watching or take a walk to the beach. Make dinner, or pop into Point Reyes or Olema for a stroll and a tasty meal.

8:00-10:00 pm: A GOOD OL’ FASHIONED STITCH ‘N BITCH
We’ll have a stitch ‘n bitch, knitting clinic, and yarn swap! We may even practice knitting without looking by watching a movie...

Sunday, June 15
10:00-11:00 am: FIELD TRIP TO BLACK MOUNTAIN WEAVERS
We’ll visit Point Reyes Station’s local yarn store.
